James Murtagh Jewellers, situated in the picturesque tourist town of Westport, Ireland, is a family operated jewellery retail business owned by James and Áine Murtagh. James grew up in the jewellery business. His father Joe, established his first store in Kiltimagh in 1955, moved to Castlebar in 1962 and became one of the best known jewellery retailers in Ireland.
James became interested in the jewellery business at an early age and after finishing school and college, he worked abroad for a while before returning home to buy out his fathers second store in Westport at the end of 1988. Since then James and his wife Áine (married in 1986 and have four lovely daughters, Stephanie, Jennifer, Alison and Natalie) have built up their business by catering for the needs of local people and the large number of visitors to Westport.
It soon became obvious that a mail order service was necessary to assist the many foreign visitors to their shop. This service operated very well for many years but with the arrival of the world wide web, the Murtagh family decided to offer their unique service to a wider customer base with their secure shopping-cart website 'www.celtic-jewellery.com' which opened in November 1999.
